SGU Put Out Strong Effort In Loss

Surrey Guildford was coming off two idle weeks and was pitted against the undefeated Burnaby Selects. To add to the adversity SGU was suffering a couple of significant injuries and had to adjust their playing style to compensate.

Early in the game, United looked really strong. The Surrey boys were defensively disciplined and frustrated Burnaby. Despite the effort SGU allowed a soft goal on a shot from distance to go down 1-0. The squad responded beautifully and pushed right back; their effort was rewarded and SGU cracked open Burnaby's back line before United's striker nutmegged the keeper from in close to tie it up. Score at the half, 1-1.

In the second half Burnaby pressed hard to earn the win. SGU was starting to get streched but still was not giving up scoring chances. Unfortunately, United was not mounting any chances to help their cause. Midway through the half SGU gave up a free kick from about 30 yards out and the ensuing shot off the free kick beat United's keeper to put the Selects up 2-1. Surrey Guildford simply did not have the resources to chase the game against a top team and pushed for the tying goal but had little effect. Final score 2-1.

Next week SGU takes on Abbotsford in their final game before the break. The time off is welcome as United's ailing players are getting close to returning and the squad should be one hundred percent healthy upon returning to league play in January.
