SGU Limps Into the Holiday Break

With a month off from games shortly ahead, SGU had only to get past the Abbotsford Mariners to finish off a fairly successful first half of the season. Abbotsford's struggles from early on have continued, leaving them still searching for their first point.

From the opening whistle SGU was firmly in control but was wholly inept in terms of building an attack. While there were flashes of good play, SGU continually shot themselves in the foot when two or three good decisions/plays were followed up one bad decision, bad touch or poorly executed pass. The result of was a rather mundane first half that saw Abbotsford completely snuffed out in their attack and SGU seemingly trying to tip-toe through the proverbial mine field.

In the second half SGU was marginally better but again nearly cost themselves dearly when a poor pass was picked off and the resulting counter-attack was only thwarted by a brave first save followed up by a shocking display of finishing from the Abbotsford striker who somehow managed to avoid the gaping maw of the net and blow the chance to take the lead. Shortly after SGU finally capped off a chance by putting a good ball onto goal that was mishandled by the keeper in the pouring rain and put the Surrey boys up 1-0. The remainder of the game was a rather uninteresting affair highlighted only by a fantastic piercing run forward that split open Abbotsford at the back and was finished astutely to put SGU up 2-0 where the score would remain.

Though not the most well executed performance of the year, Surrey Guildford managed to pick up three points in the standings and keep a clean sheet for their effort. After a bit of a tumultuous first half, SGU have come through it in surprisingly good shape. Despite working through some significant injuries, suspensions and difficult scheduling SGU sits in fourth going into the break. If United can max out their points in their 'games-in-hand', it will see them jump up to second in league.
