Disciplined Effort Yields Result

Coquitlam Metro Ford Euro was going into the match on a two-game win streak and were tied for fifth in the table, three points back of SGU and Victoria in third. The pressure was on for the Surrey boys as a loss would set them back significantly from the top of the standings.

Surrey Guildford looked very focussed even prior to warm-up and their pre-game preparation was on point. Euro's game was typical of their style right from the opening whistle with lots of possession. United had thier periods of possession but did very well to remain composed in defense and was extremely stingy in giving Euro any forward progress. Although CMF was able to hang onto the ball longer, Surrey Guildford were able to create a couple more scoring chances in a game that was not yielding many opportunities. Score at the half, nil-nil.

The Surrey boys were equally dilligent in the second frame and their patience was rewarded. About the 12 minute mark of the second half, SGU caught Euro unbalanced with even numbers at the back and a couple of excellent forward runs stretched them to the limit. SGU fed a ball right through Euro's back line and sprung a player onto goal who finished well for the 1-0 lead. Coquitlam Metro Ford tried valiantly to surge back but SGU was stifling. Content to allow CMF to hold possession outside of dangerous areas, Euro threatened but never really mounted the truly dangerous opportunity they need to draw even. To United's credit, they looked very comfortable and organized in defending the lead. Final score 1-0.

The three points keeps SGU tied for third (with Victoria) in the standings; with the Victoria Capitals next on the schedule, there will likely be some movement around the top of the table before the month is out.
