After being rather impotent offisively, for two consecutive weeks, Surrey-Guildford worked hard on giving themselves a few more options in attack for this week's contest. The Abbotsford Mariners had opened the season well but were now winless in four; SGU would be quite content to run that streak to five.
Within minutes of the opening kickoff, SGU began to dictate the pace of the game. United were attacking down both flanks and able to get in several dangerous crosses but couldn't find an early goal. As the first half wore on, Abbotsford were certainly chasing United but continually showed the dangerous threat of a through ball. Were it not for some solid goalkeeping, United could have found themselves down a goal for the third straight game. The Surrey boys were quite successful in creating the scoring chances that had been missing from previous weeks but between the defense, goalkeeper and United's own missed finishes the score was 0-0 at the half.
After the break, Surrey-Guildford found a way to get better. They were winning more challenges and were able to keep building quality chances but still couldn't finish. About the fifty-five minute mark, SGU appeared to get on the board at last but the goal was called back; offside. Inside the last three minutes, with the game still locked at zeros, the Mariners got in on the counter-attack from an SGU corner but the United keeper came up big once again to nullify the opportunity. Surrey-Guildford were finally rewarded in injury time when a well swung in cross was nodded quickly onto goal, the Abby keeper got a piece of it, but not enough and SGU got the lead with no time left on the clock. United wins 1-0.
Next week Surrey-Guildford takes on the cross-town opposition, the Surrey Selects.
