Going into the quarter-final of the Challenge Cup, SGU were three weeks removed from their last outing which was a miserable effort against the Dunbar Spartans. In that game, Surrey Guildford looked tired and worn out from a long and demanding season. This weekend's game was a good matchup for United, despite a tie and a loss in their two meetings this year, SGU felt they outplayed the Delta Selects.
Right at kickoff Surrey Guildford surged and started attacking Delta. The Surrey boys nearly scored inside the five minute mark and continued to press for some time. Delta managed to weather the early pressure and began to counter a bit. Near the twenty five minute mark, Delta opened the scoring on a ball that was played onto goal and resulted in a rebound that was tapped in to go up 1-0. SGU failed to rally before halftime and went into the break trailing.
At half, SGU put together a tactical plan to attack the game in the second half, the squad made a decision to go down swinging rather than potentially facing PK's. Coming out of the break SGU spun their wheels a bit trying to get going but as time wore on, they were building more scoring chances and giving up fewer. With twenty minutes remaining, SGU still had not equalized and had to play with a little more urgency. With fifteen minutes remaining one of United's centre mids took a risk jumping up to lead the attack and a great effort was rewarded with a goal to draw even.
Having already made the decision to just go for it, SGU didn't miss a beat after the goal and kept on pressing Delta back into their own end. With just under ten minutes remaining, United's hard work was rewarded again as SGU's striker beat the onrushing Delta keeper down low to put SGU ahead. With the lead, Surrey took no chances and shifted back into a defensive formation to stear home the win and secure a spot in the Semi-Finals.
In the semis, Surrey Guildford will face Richmond United.
