SGU opened the season away against Langley United. Langley played up with 11 aside game last season and as a result would likely be a little more organized with the full size game.
By all accounts, Surrey Guildford opened the game well, keeping possession and spreading the field but failed to build any scoring chances. As the first half progressed SGU slowly allowed themselves to get comfortable with a lackadaisical style of play and it ultimately cost them. A miscue on a pass back resulted in Langley getting a tap in for a 1-0 lead. That score would remain going into the half.
In the second half SGU failed to snap themselves out of their proverbial rut and the coaching staff had to aid the process. With twenty minutes remaining in the game Surrey Guildford really started to compete well and began to dominate the game. As SGU started winning challenges they were also able to maintain possession and start breaking down the Langley defense. Langley's back line was clumsily taking fouls around their box and after giving SGU several chances, the Surrey boys finally converted on a free kick from 25 yards out (see video) to tie the game a 1-1. SGU would get a handful of opportunities to go ahead but simply could not find the back of the net. Very late in the game, Langley were reduced to 10 men as one of their players lost composure and received a straight red card booking.
Next week, Surrey Guildford United have their home opener against Richmond United.
