Surrey-Guildford United played their second and final exhibition Sunday evening prior to the Port Moody Tournament on June 6th and 7th. United was taking on next week's hosts Port Moody AC Selects. Both teams were missing a number of players.
From the opening kick-off through much of the first half neither team mounted any kind of dangerous attack. United, for their part, struggled to string together more than three passes while in posession of the ball. Surrey-Guildford did manage to earn several corners but were completely unwilling to challenge in the box and several good crosses went to waste. Port Moody were the first to get on the scoreboard on a handball in the box, the resulting penalty was converted for the 1-0 lead. For the remainder of the half both teams traded possession in the midfield with neither team creating anything productive.
In the second half SGU looked better in their challenges but still struggled to connect together. United was able to climb even early in the half; with the A.C. Selects keeper out to challenge, a loose ball fell to the feet of a United striker who calmly put the ball into the wide open net from well out. Shortly after Surrey-Guildford finally converted off a corner by getting up for a ball and creating a scramble in the box, in the melee United popped the ball in for a 2-1 lead.
United continued to look out of sync for most of the game but played well defensively limiting scoring chances. Very late in the game the Port Moody keeper mis-hit a punt and was caught way out of his net, United's striker very astutely got on the end of the punt and hit it, full volley, back onto goal and in before the scrambling keeper could get back. Final score 3-1.
Surrey-Guildford certainly showed that they still need time to sort out their play and get comfortable with each other, however despite some very average performaces, they have earned wins in both their first two exhibitions. United's first real test begins next weekend, they take on the Richmond Young Gunners in the first game of the Port Moody Showcase Tournament.
