Surrey-Guildford United played their first game together after the squad was formed one month ago. The SGU team would be facing CMF Euro who have been playing and training but were without four top players.
United was fairly organized to start the game, the team was connecting passes together as well as could be expected with new faces and new systems. The opening goal came about the 12 minute mark when a rather innocuous looking shot from distance managed to elude the Euro keeper and give SGU the 1-0 lead. Coquitlam Metro Ford were forced back on their heels for much of the first half but did manage to threaten on occasion. United opened a 2-0 lead on a through ball that was collected and finished well by the SGU striker. Late in the first half, United stretched their lead even further when a well delivered corner was nodded home; score at the half, 3-0.
In the second half SGU seemed to lose their way a little bit. Euro started winning more challenges and United became disorganized with their system. Individual skill allowed Surrey-Guildford to continue to build scoring chances but the disorganization left them vulnerable defensively which Euro took advantage of. Coquitlam Metro Ford got on the scoreboard when SGU poorly played their own goal kick and as a result gave up the tally to close the lead by one, 3-1. As United struggled to find some structure to their game they began to tire for their efforts. Late in the game Euro was able to capitalize on United's fatigue and played a ball over the top of SGU's back line for their striker to run on to, he promptly slotted it home to cut the lead to 1. With little time remaining Surrey-Guildford held off Euro and earned the 3-2 win.
Despite the disorganization in the second half, United put together a fairly solid first game and earned a result in the process. The team has no more exhibitions planned at this point and look to play their next game when they open the Port Moody Tournament in June.
