SGU was coming off a solid performance the week previous and were looking to stay near the top of the table with a win over a solid North Delta side that had also been earning favorable results.
Surrey-Guildford certainly looked to be the stronger side right from the opening whistle maintaining posession and building scoring chances with regularity. The Surrey boys were tenacious after the ball however lacked the finishing touch to get on the board. North Delta, despite all the pressure, were composed defensively and did not get rattled. Going into the half, the game yet to find its opening goal.
SGU knew the longer the game remained even the more stingy and stubborn North Delta would become. Near the 45th minute Surrey-Guildford were able to convert a corner to go up 1-0 and the way the game had gone it would have appeared to be enough as North Delta had yet to get a scoring opportunity in the second half. Midway through the second half however, North Delta were awarded a free kick 25 yards out near the right touchline. Although not a particularly dangerous area, with significant wind and the ball struck with no spin, the ball danced all over the place before finding the far post side netting and tying the game.
SGU pressed hard for the last 15 minutes but numerous opportunities were poorly struck and easily handled by the Delta keeper. Final score 1-1. With the tie, Surrey-Guildford stays in the top five but is eager to prove they are the complete package, not just adept in posession and defending. SGU looks to put their offence on display in week 4 against North Shore.
