Surrey-Guildford United was well prepared going into the Nike Crossfire Tournament, with significantly stronger opposition, SGU was looking to advance to the final four and looked very ready to accomplish that goal.
In game one of the tournament, United took on the Columbia Timbers. United out-classed the Timbers for the majority of the game but simply could not get all players firing a the same time. The sub-par performance by SGU kept the game deadlocked at nil-nil until the final minutes when a misplayed pass-back resulted in a scramble and eventually a Timbers goal. With no time remaining, United lost the opener 1-0.
In game two, Surrey-Guildford took on SouthSide England out of Oregon. Knowing they needed to win at the very least to advance, SGU put together a brilliant offensive performance abusing SouthSide's back line and punishing their keeper for six goals before finally chasing him from the game. Final score 6-3.
With every other team having completed their round-robin games before SGU played their third and final game, unfortunately, United knew they could not advance even with a win. Surrey-Guildford's performance in this game reflected that knowledge. Despite going up very early in the game, United put in a feisty effort but lacked the inspired offensive performance from the previous game. Final score 2-1 loss.
Surrey-Guildford showed they are more than capable of performing at the highest level but need to put in consistent performances in order to get the results they desire. Having put in eight weeks of training through the spring and summer the squad feels well prepared and have a head-start on the season in September. The team resumes training in mid-August.
